Hobbes visits the statue of Iracema, the guardian of Fortaleza, Ceara, Brasil. In Brasilian indigenous mythology Iracema was a goddess protecting the area that is now Fortaleza, although

the Portuguese colonists invaded and won a decisive victory.

Now, Fortaleza is better known as the daughter of an indigenous chief in Iracema, a popular novel written in 1865 by José de Alencar, the region’s most revered author.
